Subject: Using FORMAT Under DOS 4.0 and 5.0
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
GENERAL
INFORMATION: A customer reported something he thought to be a hardware
or NetWare shell problem. After some testing, the
problem appears to be with DOS's implementation of the
FORMAT.COM under DOS 4.0 and 5.0.
Here's what he saw and has been duplicated here:
Boot W/S to DOS 4.0, ipx, net4, f:, login......
Network Search drive mapped to 4.0 DOS dir on F/S
Sitting at F: drive
Remove floppy from drive A:
Type FORMAT A: <Return>
DOS prompts with.... Insert new diskette for drive A:
and press ENTER when ready...
Insert diskette in drive A: and continue format
After format completes give volume name or carriage return.
Say "n" to Format another (Y/N)?n<Return>
Returns to F: (no problem to this point)
Now, Remove diskette in drive A:
At F: type FORMAT A:<Return>
This time DOS errors...Not ready error reading drive A
Abort, Retry, Fail?
DOS 5.0 does the same, DOS 3.3 doesn't require a
formatted diskette to be in drive A: regardless of the
number of times FORMAT is executed. DOS 4.0 and 5.0,
for whatever reasons, require it after the first
execution of FORMAT.
